It is sometimes said that an alcoholic has to hit bottom before getting sober. Never has that been more clear than now, as Democrat and Republican alike open the bottle one more time before they go home. One for the road? The spending bill ($1.1 trillion) contains 6700 earmarks, is nearly 2000 pages long, and appears to have been purposely jammed into the works just before Congress breaks for Christmas.
We all know how it usually turns out for an alcoholic that wants just one more drink before going sober. He/she has not hit bottom yet, and until that point, no amount of counseling, cajoling, or outright threatening will work. We all have a bottom, it’s just that some people die before they hit it.
Which brings to mind an interesting question. Will Congress ever hit bottom? One might understand it if only the Democrats who were shown the door Nov. 2 guzzled up. Any number of Republicans bellied up to the bar, though, removing any suspicion that it was a jilted party thing.
Looks like we citizens need to administer some more tough love. Congress, if you think we were just kidding, go ahead and pass this outrage. We are planning an intervention and you won’t like it.
