My 500th Blog!

Dear Readers:

Today is a special day for me. It marks my 500th blog. Thanks to all of you who make it worth getting up early to share my ideas about life, love, and liberty. Well, at least life and liberty. I leave love and related topics to Dr. Phil.

I started writing this blog in response to the unprecedented events of 2008. The economic catastrophe that began then is still unfolding. There are no credible prospects for a recovery for the next several years by anyone’s reckoning. In my view, that is the good news. The bad news is that the worst is still ahead of us.

Sometimes it is difficult to keep from sounding like a scold in the midst of such insanity. That is not my intention. Deep down, I still believe in us–humanity–and all the wonder contained within us. I believe in human beings prospering through cooperation in a land of freedom. I believe in the capacity of individuals who can to help those who can’t, but not those who won’t. I believe we are destined to improve the lot of all of humanity, but only when humanity is seen as the sanctity of every individual, not in some abstract notion of “society.”

We have allowed ourselves to be conned by glib talkers and sideshow barkers. Their time is drawing to a close. Our time, the era of the individual, is just dawning. The founders of our country set forth principles that for the first time recognized people as ends in themselves, not a means to the ends of others, royal or otherwise. We damn near let it get away from us. It is time to take it back.

No one knows how this will all turn out. The people with a vested interest in big government will not go willingly–crony capitalists, self-righteous do-gooders, and de facto socialists. They will use every dirty trick in the book to squelch our bid to be truly free. Free from obscene tax rates, free from groping at the airport, free from being told what to eat and how to live.

In the end, individual rights are asserted, not granted. It is time to start asserting ourselves aggressively. Peacefully, but aggressively. It is time to be rigid, not malleable, strong, not weak, and smart, not stupid. It is time to refuse to cooperate with those who would rape us dead and toss away the carcass. It is time for you, for me, to claim our birthright as free men and women. Join the fight. Spread the word. Live your life, without apology, and consider me your brother.
